As filmmakers, we think about venues differently than wedding planners or photographers. Here are three things we always consider that you might not have thought about:
The light at golden hour. Some venues face east, which means the sunset light hits the back of the building rather than the front where ceremonies happen. This matters enormously for both photos and film. Ask your venue which direction the ceremony area faces and what the light is like between 6pm and 8pm in summer. Better yet, ask your videographer.
The acoustics for vows. Outdoor ceremonies in windy locations (cliff-tops, open beaches) can make it very difficult to capture clean audio of vows. This doesn't mean you shouldn't choose these venues. It means you need a videographer who brings proper audio equipment: wireless lapel microphones, wind protection, and backup recorders. Always ask about this.
The variety of backdrops. The best venues offer multiple visual environments within the same property: gardens, interiors, architectural details, landscape views. This gives your filmmaker more to work with and creates a richer, more dynamic film.
Don't choose a venue from photos alone. Photos are taken at the perfect moment with the perfect angle. Ask for a video walkthrough. Or better yet, visit in person during the time of year your wedding will take place. The light, the atmosphere, and the energy of a venue change completely between seasons.
