Peak season (July and August): Hottest weather, longest days, highest prices. Everything is more expensive and books out earliest. Temperatures can reach 40°C in the Alentejo and inland regions. Great for Algarve beach weddings but can be too hot for midday outdoor ceremonies elsewhere.
Sweet spot (May, June, September, October): This is when most experienced wedding planners in Portugal recommend getting married. Warm and sunny but not scorching. The light is absolutely golden, especially in September and October. Prices are 15 to 25% lower than peak summer. Venues have more availability. This is our personal favourite time to film.
Off-season (November to March): Lower prices across the board. More rain, shorter days, but Lisbon and Porto still have mild winters. Perfect for couples who want a moody, intimate atmosphere. Think candlelit dinners, fireplaces, cozy quintas. Fewer guests tend to travel in winter, so this works best for very intimate celebrations.

Yes, foreigners can legally marry in Portugal. The process is straightforward but does involve some paperwork. Here's the short version:
What you need: valid passports, birth certificates (apostilled), a Certificate of Matrimonial Capacity (or equivalent from your country proving you're free to marry), and in some cases, proof of residency or a tourist visa. All documents must be translated into Portuguese by a certified translator.
The process: you register the intention to marry at the local Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil) at least 30 days before the ceremony. The registry publishes the banns and, if there are no objections, issues the marriage certificate after the ceremony.
Our honest recommendation: hire a wedding planner who has experience with international couples. They handle all the paperwork, translations, and registry appointments. It saves you enormous stress and ensures nothing goes wrong with deadlines. This is not the place to DIY.
Choosing vendors from another country and across time zones is one of the biggest challenges of a destination wedding. A few things we've learned from working alongside dozens of international weddings:
Book early. The best venues and key vendors (photographer, videographer, planner) book 12 to 18 months in advance for summer dates. If your wedding is between June and September, start the search at least a year ahead.
Prioritize communication. Choose vendors who respond quickly, speak your language fluently, and make you feel comfortable on video calls. You won't be able to meet most of them in person before the day. The quality of communication during planning is a very reliable indicator of how they'll perform on the day itself.
Ask for full weddings, not just highlights. This applies especially to photographers and videographers. Anyone can make a 60-second highlight reel look great. Ask to see a full gallery or a full wedding film. That's where you see how they handle an entire day: the pressure, the difficult light, the unexpected moments. Don't choose by price alone. Portugal is affordable, but that doesn't mean the cheapest option is a good idea. A photographer at €800 and one at €2,500 are not the same thing. The difference shows up in the final result, and you only get one chance to capture your wedding day.
